Once upon a time, around one hundred years ago, the north of Brazil was unofficially ruled by the Cangaceiros, heavily armed men who terrorised the population, but who were also considered defenders of the poor, heroes and justice seekers. One of the most famous cangaceiro leaders was Lampiao. In 1930 he invited his lover, Maria Bonita, to take part in the group. She followed them for 8 long years, until she was killed by the official police, along with Lampiao and several members of his group.
Lampiao and Maria Bonita are considered legends in Brazil, and many stories, movies and songs were written about them. Their lives are somewhat controversial, with arguments about their intentions and actions constantly intermingling with the legend. Her beauty, however, has never been part of the discussion.
Fernanda and Bruna, Brazilians living far away from their home, consider Maria Bonita's story an inspiration. Not wanting to take her identity, they use her name backwards, Bonita Maria.
They created a line of costume jewellery while living in Barcelona, a colorful city full of ideas and inspiration. |
